Damascus Care and Cleaning:
- Hand wash only. After each use, immediately wash the knife with warm water and mild dish soap. Never put it in a dishwasher, as the high heat and harsh detergents can ruin the blade and handle.
- Avoid abrasives. Use a soft cloth or sponge to gently scrub the blade. Avoid steel wool or other harsh, abrasive cleaners, which can scratch the blade's surface and damage its distinctive pattern.
- Dry immediately. Thoroughly and completely dry the knife with a soft, clean towel. Pay close attention to the area around the handle and pivot, where water can easily get trapped and cause rust.
- Beware of acidic foods. Acidic substances, such as citrus, tomatoes, and vinegar, can cause discoloration or etching if left on the blade. Clean the knife promptly after cutting these foods.
- Apply protective oil. After drying, apply a thin layer of food-grade mineral oil to the blade to create a protective barrier against moisture. Avoid using cooking oils like olive oil, as they can go rancid and leave a sticky residue.
- Store in a dry environment. Keep your knife in a dry place, away from excessive moisture and extreme temperature changes.
- Never use a leather sheath for long-term storage.Leather sheaths can trap moisture and chemicals that promote rust. Use them only for carrying, and ensure the blade is oiled and completely dry before storing.
- Properly sharpen the blade. Damascus steel holds its edge well, but regular honing and occasional sharpening are necessary. Use a quality whetstone or honing rod, and avoid electric sharpeners, which can damage the blade's composition.
Removing Minor Rust:
- If you do see small rust spots, you can often remove them without harming the blade.
- Create a paste by mixing baking soda with a few drops of water.
- Gently rub the paste over the rusted area with a soft cloth or cotton swab.
- Rinse the blade thoroughly, dry it completely, and apply a fresh coat of mineral oil.
